Leveraging technology to support aging in place

Modern technology is reshaping the future of long-term care, from AI-powered health monitoring to smart home solutions. The future of aging will be a balance of this innovation with the essential human element of caregiving.

Long-term care is undergoing a dramatic transformation as technology becomes increasingly integrated into every aspect of senior care. The shift isn’t only about adding digital tools, it is about reimagining the fundamentals of how we provide care, support independence, and enhance the quality of life as we age.

Smart home technology has emerged and is changing how we can age in place. According to AARP’s “2024 Tech Trends in adults 50+” report, in the past, the number of adults aged 50-plus adopting technology has lagged behind those who are aged 18–49. Now, in most categories, ownership is about the same in the two age groups. Motion sensors can detect falls and unusual patterns, while automated medication dispensers can help ensure proper dosing and timing. Voice activated systems allow seniors with mobility issues to control their environment from adjusting room temperature to turning on and off the lights, fostering a greater sense of independence.

Telehealth has revolutionized how medical care can be delivered. Telehealth in Washington state is considered highly accessible, with laws that mandate insurance coverage for telehealth services at parity with in-person visits, allowing for a wide range of telehealth options including audio-only consultations. Virtual consultations have made specialist care more accessible, reducing the need to stressful transportation and increasing access for residents in rural areas. Remote monitoring systems can track vital signs and send alerts to healthcare providers to potential issues before they become emergencies.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are being used to analyze an array of health data and helping to predict and prevent health issues. These systems can identify subtle changes in behavior or health metrics that might escape human observation, enabling more proactive and preventative care approaches.

The integration of technology in long-term care isn’t without challenges. Staff training requirements have increased significantly and there are ongoing concerns about data privacy and security. Additionally, there is a delicate balance between maintaining the human touch that is essential in caregiving and leveraging advances in technology. This technology should be used to enhance caregiving, not replace personal interactions.

In the future, Washingtonians will be able to use their WA Cares benefits to purchase assistive technology to support aging in place. This could include remote entry door lock, motion activated lights, automatic medication dispenser and more. WA Cares benefits cover a wide range of other services and supports as well, including in-home care, home modifications, meal delivery, transportation and more. With WA Cares, you choose the benefits that will work for you and your family.

Access to WA Cares benefits will give Washingtonians more dignity and choice at a time when they are most vulnerable. Beginning July 2026, anyone who has met contribution requirements and needs care will be able to receive benefits. The full benefit amount starts at $36,500 and grows over time with inflation.
